In Kubernetes v1.37, the PersistentVolumeClaimUnusedSinceTime feature has moved to beta and is enabled by default.
A PersistentVolumeClaim (PVC) is a request for persistent storage. A Pod is a Kubernetes object that runs one or more containers. The PVC protection controller adds an Unused condition to each claim, indicating whether a running Pod references it.
If no non-terminal Pod references a PVC, Unused is True. If a running or pending Pod references the PVC, Unused is False.
The lastTransitionTime field in the condition records when the PVC became unused.

- In Kubernetes v1.37, the PersistentVolumeClaimUnusedSinceTime feature has moved to beta and is enabled by default. (confirmed by the publication itself: evidence; «Kubernetes v1.37 promotes the PersistentVolumeClaimUnusedSinceTime feature gate to Beta (enabled by default).»)
- The PVC protection controller adds an Unused condition to each claim, indicating whether a running Pod references it. (confirmed by the publication itself: evidence; «With this feature, the PersistentVolumeClaim (PVC) protection controller adds an Unused condition to each PVC, telling you whether any running pod currently references it»)
- If no non-terminal Pod references a PVC, Unused is True. (confirmed by the publication itself: evidence; «No non-terminal pods reference the PVC Unused=True NoPodsUsingPVC»)
- If a running or pending Pod references the PVC, Unused is False. (confirmed by the publication itself: evidence; «At least one running or pending pod references the PVC Unused=False PodUsingPVC»)
- The lastTransitionTime field in the condition records when the PVC became unused. (confirmed by the publication itself: evidence; «when the condition transitions from False to True , the lastTransitionTime records exactly when the PVC became idle.»)
